Garage and Outbuilding Demolition in Belleville, IL

Belleville has been the St. Clair County seat for two centuries, and plenty of its lots still carry a garage, shed or back porch that somebody built generations ago. When one of those starts to lean or rot through, Jon takes it down, loads it into the dump truck and leaves the spot graded for grass or whatever is next.

Demolition in Belleville

An old city with old outbuildings

Belleville was founded in 1814, became a village in 1819 and a city in 1850. By 1870 roughly nine in ten residents were German-born or of German descent, and the oldest streets still show it. The Belleville Historic District alone covers 154 acres of homes built between 1830 and 1900.

Behind many houses in town stands something that was added later: a frame garage, a garden shed, a workshop or a lean-to. Decades on, the roof sags and the sills have gone soft. At that point the building is more of a hazard than storage, and that is the usual Belleville demolition call.

Taking down a detached garage

Jon starts with what the garage is built from, how close it stands to the house and the fence, and how a machine will reach it. On a tight city lot, getting in is the first thing he works out, before anything is pulled down.

The walls and roof come down with the excavator and go straight into the dump truck. The slab and the footings can come out on the same visit, including the part below grade. If only the slab is the trouble, concrete removal in Belleville handles that by itself.

Coal mines under St. Clair County

A bituminous coal deposit underlies some 400,000 acres of this county. By 1874 about a hundred shaft mines were working in and around Belleville, and the farmers who went underground to work them helped build the town.

That history is worth a thought during a tear-down. If the slab you are removing has cracks that keep widening, or the ground beside it has dropped, say so. The Illinois State Geological Survey publishes a coal mine viewer you can search by location, and you will hear plainly if what is there looks like more than ordinary settling.

Disconnects, locates and the city permit

Inside city limits, the Health, Housing and Building Department issues building permits, and Belleville's permit application names demolition alongside new construction. Check with the city before a date goes on the calendar.

The utility shuts off and disconnects power, gas and water to the building first. Then JULIE is called at 811 at least 48 hours before digging, not counting weekends or holidays. The city marks its own water and sewer lines along with everyone else, so the main running past your garage gets flagged too. Pick a date only once the disconnects are confirmed.

Grading the spot so it drains

Richland Creek flows through much of Belleville, and the U.S. Geological Survey was already mapping its floods near the city in 1972. Most yards sit well above the creek, but the clay under them is slow to soak up a heavy rain.

So when the building is gone, the hole left by the slab and footings is filled and the ground is shaped to fall away from the house. Leave a hollow in clay and it holds water for days. If the whole yard is soggy, yard drainage in Belleville can be sorted while the machines are already there.

What 3D takes down, and the price

Sheds, garages, carports, decks, above-ground pools and old outbuildings are all part of demolition and debris removal. Houses that need asbestos abatement are not, and you will hear that on the first visit if it applies. The garage and shed demolition cost guide explains what moves the number.

Jon quotes every job himself after seeing it, and the quote is free. Hauling is part of the figure rather than an extra line later. The rest of 3D's work around the city is on the Belleville excavating page. Photos of the building and the way in, sent ahead, speed things up.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Detached garages. Frame and block garages pulled down, loaded and hauled away.
  • Sheds and workshops. Old backyard buildings cleared down to bare ground.
  • Decks and porches. Rotting decks and back porches taken off and the debris hauled.
  • Slabs and footings. The concrete underneath broken out and the hole filled and graded.

Belleville and the towns nearby

Northeast of Belleville, much of O'Fallon was built from the 1980s on, so demolition in O'Fallon leans toward decks, pools and sheds on subdivision lots. North of town, demolition in Collinsville is mostly hillside work above the American Bottom. Both sit inside the same Metro East run of jobs, and the full list of places 3D covers is on the surrounding areas page.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the guides.

Do I need a permit to tear down a garage in Belleville?

The City of Belleville's building permit application covers demolition, and the Health, Housing and Building Department issues those permits. Ask them before a date is fixed. The utility disconnects service first, and JULIE marks buried lines before any digging starts.

Can the slab come out on the same visit?

Yes. Once the walls and roof are loaded, the floor slab and footings are broken out and hauled in the same job. The hole is filled and graded, or left ready for a rock base if a new pad is going in.

Will you demolish an old house?

3D takes down garages, sheds, barns, decks, carports and pools. Houses that need asbestos abatement first are not part of the work. If an older Belleville house is involved, Jon will tell you where that line falls when he looks.

How do I get a price for demolition in Belleville?

Call or text (217) 710-0606, or email 3dexcavatinginc@gmail.com, with the address and a few photos of the building and the way in. Jon comes out, looks at it and gives one free figure with hauling included.
