Grading Around Decatur
If you live in Decatur, you probably know your yard's wet spot by heart. It is the patch you cannot mow in April. It is the corner where the downspout water ends up. It might be the side of the house where the crawlspace smells damp after every storm.
We regrade the ground so that water has a clear path out. Soil is cut from high spots and moved to low ones, fill is brought in where there is not enough on site, and the slope by the house is turned to run away from it.
The finished yard drains after rain instead of holding it. You can mow it, plant it or put rock on it, and the low spot stops coming back.
We work in Decatur as part of our regular central Illinois route out of Hillsboro. Grading is often the main job, with a drain line or a load of fill alongside it. Our Decatur excavating page lists every service here, and grading and dirt work explains rough and final grade.

What the Job Covers
- Regrading around foundations and slabs
- Low spots filled and smoothed
- Drainage swales cut to an outlet
- Fill dirt and topsoil delivered
- Pads leveled for sheds, shops and garages
- Surplus soil spread on site or hauled away
Grading in Decatur: What to Know
Prairie soil and slow drainage in Macon County
Much of the farmland around Decatur is deep, dark prairie soil. Drummer, the Illinois state soil and the most widespread soil in the state, is classed as poorly drained. Ground like that grows great crops and holds water in a yard for a long time.
That is why grade does so much of the work here. When the soil will not soak water up quickly, the surface has to move it off. We shape the yard so rain runs off before it can sit and soak the ground by your foundation.
Yard grading company for older and newer Decatur homes
Decatur is a big city with dozens of official neighborhoods, and the grading problems change with the age of the house. Older homes often have yards that have settled toward the foundation over the years. Newer builds sometimes went in with too little fall from day one.
Either way the fix starts by finding where the water should go. That might be the street, a side ditch, or a swale along the lot line. Out near Lake Decatur and the Sangamon River, low ground and outlets need extra thought, because water cannot just be pushed onto the next lot.
Grading, drains, or both
Some yards need a pipe, not just a new slope. If the outlet is far away or the ground is very flat, a drain line can carry water the last stretch. We trench those too; see trenching in Decatur.
Most of the time grading alone does it, and it is the simpler fix to live with. Our guide on how to grade a yard for drainage explains what a good slope looks like. If your yard is not doing that, send Jon a photo after rain.

Decatur Grading Questions
Not seeing yours? Call or text (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the common questions.
How much does yard grading cost in Decatur?
It depends on the size of the area, how much soil moves, whether fill is brought in or hauled out, and access. Jon gives a free quote from photos or a visit.
What time of year is right for regrading a yard?
When the ground is dry enough to work without rutting. Late spring through fall is typical. Working wet clay makes a mess and does not compact well.
Will grading stop water getting into my crawlspace?
Turning surface water away from the house is the first thing to fix, and often the biggest help. Water coming up from below is a different problem.
Do you grade lots and pads in Decatur as well as yards?
Yes. Building pads, shed and garage pads, and full lots are all graded with the same crew and equipment.

Tell us the job
Call, text or send the form. A photograph of the ground and the way in tells us more than a description does — width of the gate, where the truck can sit, what is in the way.
Jon prices it himself
Jon quotes every job on this site. You are not talking to a call centre and you are not getting a number from someone who has not looked at the ground.
The machines turn up
Excavator, dozer, skid steer or the truck — whatever the job actually needs, with an operator who has run it before.
It gets left clean
Spoil hauled off or graded back, whichever was agreed. The job is not done while there is a pile sat in your yard.
