Site Prep Around Springfield
A build that starts on bad ground stays in trouble. Slabs crack, water stands against the walls and the driveway sinks where the fill was never packed. Most of those problems were set the day the dirt was moved. Builders and owners in Springfield call us to get that day right.
The work follows a set order. Topsoil comes off and is piled for reuse. The pad is cut or built up to the grade on the plans. Footings are dug to the lines and depths given, and stone goes down where the slab or the drive will sit. Drainage is sorted out before the pad is finished, not after the first storm.
When we leave, the site is ready for the next crew. The pad is level and firm, the spoil is gone or spread where you wanted it, and the water has a way off the lot.
How we approach each job is set out on our excavation and site preparation page. Send Jon the plans or a sketch and a photo of the lot. The estimate is free and he gives it himself.

Site Prep in Springfield: What to Know
Site preparation on Springfield's flat ground
Springfield is the seat of Sangamon County, and it sits on a broad plain near the Sangamon River. This is till plain country. The ground was laid down by glaciers and is mostly flat, with relief of no more than about 20 feet across much of the area. The soil is deep and fertile, which is good for crops and harder on builders.
Flat ground does not shed water by itself. A pad set at the same height as the yard around it will hold water at the foundation. On most Springfield lots the pad needs to be raised and the ground shaped to fall away from the building. We plan that height before the first load of dirt moves.
Topsoil, fill and what goes under the slab
Deep black topsoil is a gift for a garden and a problem under a slab. It holds water and compresses, so it all has to come off the building footprint. We strip it, pile it to one side and spread it back on the yard once the building is up.
Where the pad has to be raised, the fill goes in layers and each one is packed before the next. Stone then goes down where the slab or the drive will sit. Skipping the packing is the most common reason a new garage floor cracks in its first winter.
Lake lots, town lots and commercial ground
Springfield lies north of Lake Springfield, a large reservoir made by damming Lick Creek. Lots near the lake can slope toward the water and carry trees. Those sites need more cutting, more care with runoff and sometimes clearing before the pad can start. Lots inside the older parts of the city bring tight access and buried lines close to the work.
Commercial lots are the same job on a bigger scale: strip, cut, fill, pack and stone. The machines change with the size of the cut. Buried lines get marked first through JULIE. For other work we do in town, see excavating in Springfield.

Springfield Site Prep Questions
Not seeing yours? Call or text (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the common questions.
What does site preparation include?
Stripping the topsoil, cutting or building the pad to grade, digging footings, placing stone and getting the drainage right. It ends when the site is ready for the next trade to start.
How much does site prep cost in Springfield?
It depends on the size of the pad and how much fill or cut it needs. Topsoil depth, access and how far the spoil has to go all count too. Every lot is different. Jon gives a free quote from plans, photos or a site visit.
Do you work from builder or engineer plans?
Yes. Give us the plans and the grades on them and the pad is built to match. If there are no plans, tell Jon what is going on the pad and he will talk it through.
Can you work in Springfield on short notice?
Springfield is about an hour from our yard in Hillsboro. It is part of our regular central Illinois work. Call or text with the date you need and Jon will tell you plainly if he can make it.

Tell us the job
Call, text or send the form. A photograph of the ground and the way in tells us more than a description does — width of the gate, where the truck can sit, what is in the way.
Jon prices it himself
Jon quotes every job on this site. You are not talking to a call centre and you are not getting a number from someone who has not looked at the ground.
The machines turn up
Excavator, dozer, skid steer or the truck — whatever the job actually needs, with an operator who has run it before.
It gets left clean
Spoil hauled off or graded back, whichever was agreed. The job is not done while there is a pile sat in your yard.
