Yard Drainage and Regrading in Belleville, IL
A lot of Belleville houses have stood for a century or more, and the yards around them have settled and been landscaped over so many times that water no longer knows where to go. When rain collects against the basement wall or stands in the lawn for days, Jon regrades the ground and gives it a way out.

Yard Drainage in Belleville
Old yards on clay
Like the rest of the Metro East, Belleville is built on loess, a wind-blown silt, with clay beneath it. That clay is the problem. Rain soaks the top few inches quickly and then sits, because the ground underneath barely takes it in.
The houses add to it. Homes in the Belleville Historic District date from 1830 to 1900, and many newer ones around town are still decades old. Over that time the soil beside a foundation settles, flower beds get built up and sidewalks get poured, until the yard slopes toward the house instead of away from it.
Turning the slope around
The first fix is usually the simplest one. The ground next to the house is built back up and shaped so it falls away for the first several feet, then carried on across the yard to somewhere the water can leave.
On an older lot that means working around what is already there: mature trees, a walk, a fence on the line, a neighbour's garage close by. Jon uses the skid steer where it fits and does the tight spots with care. The guide to grading a yard for drainage explains the fall a yard needs.
Downspouts that empty at the wall
Gutters on an older house often end at a short elbow that dumps the roof right beside the basement. In clay, that water has nowhere to go but down along the foundation.
A buried drain line fixes it. Each downspout is tied into solid pipe that runs under the lawn, with steady fall, to an outlet well clear of the house. The trench is backfilled and the surface put back. Gutters themselves and basement waterproofing are outside 3D's work, but the ground and the pipe are not. Where the outlet goes depends on the lot, and it is set where the water can spread out safely.
Richland Creek and low ground
Richland Creek flows through much of Belleville. In 1972 the U.S. Geological Survey published a flood atlas covering it and Loop Creek near the city, which says something about how they behave in a hard storm.
If your lot is close to one of them, find out whether it is in a mapped floodplain before any fill is brought in. Ask the city first. On low lots, grading is often about moving water toward the creek side gently rather than raising the whole yard. Moving water gently past the house matters more on low ground than lifting it.
Swales, neighbours and JULIE
Illinois expects lower ground to accept the water that naturally runs onto it. So the answer to runoff from next door is rarely a wall. It is usually a shallow, grassed swale that catches the water and carries it around the house.
Every trench and swale starts with a JULIE call to 811 at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends or holidays. The City of Belleville marks its own water, sanitary and storm sewer lines along with the gas and electric companies. Lines a past owner buried are not marked by anyone, so mention them.
What it costs and what comes with it
Jon walks the yard, looks at where the water enters and where it can leave, and quotes it himself. The quote is free, and a photo from the last storm helps. This work sits under 3D's grading and dirt work service.
A cracked patio that holds water can come out at the same time through concrete removal in Belleville. More of what 3D does around the city is on the Belleville excavating page. The work usually takes the skid steer and a few loads of soil, and the figure covers all of it, delivery included. When the job is done, the disturbed ground is left smooth and ready for seed or sod.

What that covers
- Back-sloping yards. Ground beside the house rebuilt so it falls away from the wall.
- Downspout lines. Roof water piped under the lawn to an outlet clear of the house.
- Grassed swales. Runoff from next door caught and carried around the house.
- Standing water. Low spots in the lawn filled and shaped to drain.

Northeast of Belleville, yard drainage in O'Fallon is mostly subdivision lots with swales that have filled in. Up the bluff in Madison County, yard drainage in Collinsville deals with steep hillside lots where water travels fast. The surrounding areas page has the rest of the towns 3D works in. Each town's ground behaves a little differently, so every yard is walked before anything is priced.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the guides.
Water sits against my basement wall after every rain. What helps?
Usually the ground beside the house has settled and now slopes toward it. Rebuilding that soil so it falls away, and piping the downspouts out under the lawn, handles most cases. Jon looks at where the water comes from before suggesting anything.
Can you stop my neighbour's water from coming into my yard?
Illinois expects lower lots to take the water that naturally runs onto them, so blocking it is not the answer. A shallow swale that catches it and carries it around your house usually works better and stays mowable.
My lot is near Richland Creek. Is that a problem?
It can be. Before fill is brought onto a lot near a creek, check with the city whether it is in a mapped floodplain. Grading on low ground is usually about guiding water toward the creek, not raising the yard.
How do I get a price for yard drainage in Belleville?
Call or text (217) 710-0606 with the address, and send a photo of the yard during or after a storm if you have one. Jon comes out, walks it with you and gives one free figure.
