Gravel Driveways in Highland, IL

Gravel Driveways Around Highland

Around Highland a driveway is often a lane. It runs a few hundred feet back to a house, then on to a machine shed or a field gate. Grain trucks, feed deliveries and tractors use it as well as cars. A drive built for a car breaks up under that kind of traffic within a season or two.

We start by asking what uses the lane and how heavy it gets. Then we strip the soft ground, set a base thick enough for that load, and pack it. The surface rock goes on last and is shaped with a crown. The lane sits a little above the field so water drains off it, not onto it.

Once that is done you get a lane that stays open in a wet spring. The truck driver stops calling to say he cannot get in. You stop filling the same holes every month.

Our driveway and gravel page explains why the base matters more than the top rock. Send Jon a photo of the entrance and the worst stretch, and say what drives on it. He prices it himself and the estimate is free.

Gravel Driveways in Highland: What to Know

Gravel driveway installation around Highland

Highland sits in southeastern Madison County and began as a Swiss settlement in 1837, first named Helvetia. The country around it is still farm ground, split among Helvetia, Saline and Marine townships. Many of the drives we see here serve farmhouses, acreage homes and outbuildings rather than town lots.

The city drains two ways. Water from the south side runs to Sugar Creek, and the northwest side drains to the East Fork of Silver Creek. Both feed the Kaskaskia River. Where the ground is flat, water can sit on the surface after rain, so a lane there is built up to stay firm.

Lake ground north of town

Highland Silver Lake was built on the East Fork, and the city limits reach about five miles north to take in the whole lake. Lots near the lake can slope toward the water or carry trees. A drive there needs the same base, plus a careful line so runoff leaves the drive before it reaches the bottom.

Tree roots and wet pockets are common on those lots. We dig them out rather than bury them, because anything soft left under the base will settle later.

Entrances on state routes and township roads

Illinois Route 160 runs through the center of town, Route 143 heads off toward Marine and Pierron, and U.S. Route 40 passes north of downtown. An entrance onto any of those is on a state right of way. That needs a permit from the Illinois Department of Transportation. A township road is under the township road commissioner, and a city street is a question for the City of Highland.

Check with the right office before the work is booked, so the entrance is built where and how they want it. For the rest of what we do in and around town, see excavating in Highland.

What is the difference between a farm entrance and a house drive?

Weight. An entrance that takes a loaded grain truck or a combine needs a thicker base and wider turning room than a drive for two cars. It is built heavier and priced to match.

How far is Highland from your yard?

About 40 minutes from Hillsboro. That is close enough that a single lane or a short drive is still worth the trip.

When should a gravel lane be built?

When the ground is dry enough to work. Building on soaked soil traps water under the base. Late spring through fall is usually easiest, but Jon will look at your ground and say.

Do you haul away the old rock and dirt?

Yes. What comes out is loaded on the truck and taken away, or spread elsewhere on the property if you would rather keep it.

How it goes

Four steps, no surprises

Tell us the job

Call, text or send the form. A photograph of the ground and the way in tells us more than a description does — width of the gate, where the truck can sit, what is in the way.

Jon prices it himself

Jon quotes every job on this site. You are not talking to a call centre and you are not getting a number from someone who has not looked at the ground.

The machines turn up

Excavator, dozer, skid steer or the truck — whatever the job actually needs, with an operator who has run it before.

It gets left clean

Spoil hauled off or graded back, whichever was agreed. The job is not done while there is a pile sat in your yard.
