Barn, Shed and Garage Demolition in Troy, IL

Troy has added more than 2,400 people since 2000, much of it on ground that was being farmed not long ago. The barns and machine sheds that came with that land, and worn garages closer to the center of town, are what Jon gets called about. 3D takes them down, hauls them off and grades the spot.

Demolition in Troy

A town still spreading onto farm ground

Troy was platted in 1819 and became a city in 1892, but most of its houses are far newer than that. Interstates 55 and 70 run along the west side of town, and Route 162 runs through the middle as Market Street and Edwardsville Road. The census counted 8,524 people here in 2000 and 10,960 in 2020.

When a farm at the edge of town is sold off, the outbuildings usually come with it. A barn, an implement shed or a lean-to that has stood empty for years is rarely worth repairing. More often it is standing right where the new house, the drive or the shop ought to go.

Barns and outbuildings on acreage

Jon looks at a barn for what it is made of, how sound it still is and what is stored inside. Old farm buildings tend to collect decades of odds and ends, so pull out anything you want to keep before the date.

The building is pulled down with the excavator, loaded and hauled out in the dump truck. A concrete floor, old footings or a pad beside the barn can come out in the same job, including the part under the ground. The barn demolition guide walks through what to expect from start to finish.

Where the water goes on Troy ground

Most of Troy drains east into small tributaries of Silver Creek, which runs south to the Kaskaskia River. The westernmost part of town drains the other way, toward Canteen Creek and the Mississippi valley. Either way, plenty of lots here slope gently toward a ditch or a drainageway.

When a barn floor comes out, it leaves a broad shallow hole in that slope. It is filled and graded to match the fall of the land around it, so the next storm heads for the ditch and not for whatever you build next. Bigger reshaping of a lot is covered under grading in Troy.

Troy's limited use permit

The City of Troy's Building and Zoning office on East Market Street issues a Limited Use Permit, and the city lists demolition, decks and carports among the work that needs one. Get that lined up before a date is fixed.

Ahead of the tear-down, the utility disconnects any power, gas or water feeding the building. JULIE has to be notified at least two working days before digging, and weekends, holidays and the day of the call do not count. Farm buildings often have a buried line to a yard light or a hydrant that the owner put in, so point those out.

What 3D does not take on

Some older barns and garages have asbestos in the roofing or the siding. 3D takes down sheds, garages, barns, carports, decks and pools, but not houses that need asbestos abatement. Jon says so on the first visit if that is what he finds.

If an old farmhouse on the same ground is coming down as well, that part needs an abatement contractor first. The outbuildings, the slabs and the grading around them can still be done by 3D once the house is dealt with, and you will know where that line falls before any machine arrives.

After the building, the next job

Once the spot is graded, it can go back to grass or turn into something else. An old barn site often becomes a parking pad or a drive for the new shop, which is where gravel driveways in Troy comes in. If part of the yard always stayed soggy, yard drainage in Troy can be sorted on the same visit.

Jon prices all of it himself, with the hauling in the figure, and the estimate costs nothing. The rest of 3D's work around town is listed on the Troy excavating page.

Troy and the towns nearby

Troy borders Glen Carbon to the northwest and Maryville to the west, and US 40 runs east from here to Highland. The same work is done in both directions: demolition in Glen Carbon is mostly garages and decks on subdivision lots, and demolition in Highland covers the older town and the farm ground around it. The demolition and debris removal page explains the service as a whole.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the guides.

Do I need a permit to demolish a building in Troy?

The City of Troy lists demolition among the work that needs a Limited Use Permit from Building and Zoning on East Market Street. Ask them before a date is set. The utility disconnects service first, and JULIE marks the lines before digging.

Can you take down an old barn on land we just bought?

Yes. Barns, machine sheds and other outbuildings are a regular job. The building is pulled down, loaded and hauled away, and the floor and footings can come out at the same time. Clear out anything you want to keep first.

What happens to the ground where the barn stood?

The hole is filled and the spot is graded to fall the same way as the land around it, so water drains off instead of pooling. If you want a pad or a drive there next, it can be shaped for that.

How do I get a price?

Call or text (217) 710-0606 with the address and a few photos of the building and the way in. Jon comes out, looks at it and gives you one free figure with the hauling included.
