Concrete Removal Around Older Homes in Belleville, IL

In a city whose oldest houses go back to the 1830s, a lot of the concrete around them has been patched, poured over and patched again. Belleville homeowners call about front steps pulling from the porch, drives broken into plates and patios that tip toward the wall. Jon breaks it out, hauls it and leaves the ground ready.

Concrete Removal in Belleville

Layers of concrete on an old lot

Belleville became a city in 1850 and has spent most of the time since filling in. Its population sat at 42,404 in the 2020 census, close to where it was in 2000, so most of the work here is on homes that are already standing, not on new lots.

On a lot that old, the concrete often comes in layers. A walk from one owner, a wider drive poured beside it, a patio added off the kitchen. When it all starts to break up, it makes sense to take it out at once rather than chase one slab at a time.

Front steps and the walk to the street

Concrete steps are heavy, and over the years many of them settle away from the house and leave a gap at the top. They are broken up where they stand and carried out, so nothing is dragged across the porch or the foundation.

The walk is next. Tree roots and freeze-thaw cycles lift it into uneven plates that catch toes. Before the new steps or walk are poured by someone else, Jon leaves a level, firm base at the height the concrete crew asks for. 3D does not pour concrete.

Drives and old garage slabs

A driveway that has cracked and dropped at the garage usually has wet, soft ground under it. Breaking it out shows how bad it is. The soft soil comes out, and a rock base is spread for the next drive, or the area is graded for grass.

When a detached garage has already come down, its slab is often left behind as a cracked pad. That goes the same way. If the garage itself is still standing, demolition in Belleville takes the building and the floor together. The concrete removal cost guide explains what drives the price.

Ground that has shifted

Most cracked concrete in town is just age, water and frost. Belleville also sits on old coal ground, though. Around a hundred shaft mines were working in and around the city by 1874.

If a patio keeps sinking along a line, or cracks run on from the slab into the foundation, mention it during the visit. The state geological survey's online coal mine viewer shows where mines are mapped. In the 34 Illinois counties where most underground mines lie, home policies must carry mine subsidence cover unless the owner rejects it in writing, so your insurer is worth a call too.

Locates and the city's own lines

Breaking out a walk or a drive means digging, even if it is only a few inches. JULIE needs at least 48 hours of notice, not counting weekends or holidays, through 811 or 800-892-0123. The work has to start within 14 calendar days of the call.

The City of Belleville marks its own water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer lines along with the other utilities. A gas or water service often runs under the front walk, so those marks matter on a shallow job as much as a deep one.

One price, then the next step

Jon checks how thick the concrete is, whether there is wire or rebar inside and how the truck will reach it. He prices it himself, as one free figure with the hauling in it. Concrete tear-out is part of 3D's demolition and debris removal work.

If water is what ruined the slab, yard drainage in Belleville can fix the cause in the same visit. If the old drive is being replaced with rock, see gravel driveways in Belleville. Everything else is on the Belleville excavating page. Photos of the slab and the drive in from the street help him plan the truck.

Belleville and the towns nearby

Up I-64 to the northeast, concrete removal in O'Fallon is mostly subdivision drives and patios. North across the county line, concrete removal in Collinsville is old concrete on hillside lots, closer to what Belleville sees. The other towns 3D covers are on the surrounding areas page, and every one of them is within reach of the dump truck. Older towns tend to call about steps and walks, newer ones about drives and patios.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the guides.

Do you pour the new concrete as well?

No. 3D breaks out and hauls the old concrete, then leaves graded ground or a compacted rock base at the height your concrete contractor wants. The new pour is done by a concrete crew.

Can you take out front steps without hurting the house?

Yes. Steps are broken where they stand and lifted out, not pulled away from the porch. Point out anything fragile close by, like a meter, a window well or a hose bib, when Jon looks at the job.

My patio keeps sinking. Could it be an old mine?

Usually it is soft fill or water under the slab. If the sinking follows a line, keeps getting worse, or the cracks reach the foundation, check the state's coal mine viewer and call your insurer. You will be told plainly if it looks like more than settling.

How do I get a quote for concrete removal in Belleville?
