Gravel Driveways Around Collinsville
Plenty of Collinsville lots are not flat, and many drives climb or drop to reach the house. On a sloped drive the water picks the path of least resistance, which is usually straight down the wheel tracks. After a few storms the rock is in a fan at the bottom and the top is bare dirt.
A drive on a slope needs more than rock. It needs a firm base, a crown or a cross slope, and a planned exit for the water at the side. We dig out the soft and washed ground, lay and pack the base, and shape the surface so runoff crosses the drive and leaves it. Where water comes onto the drive from the yard above, we deal with that too.
What you end up with is a drive that keeps its rock through a wet spring. You stop raking gravel back uphill. Visitors stop parking on the grass because the drive is too rough.
Every drive we build follows the method on our gravel driveway installation page. Call or text Jon for a free quote, and send a photo looking up the drive and one looking down.

Gravel Driveways in Collinsville: What to Know
Gravel driveway installation on Collinsville's hills and creeks
Most of Collinsville lies in southern Madison County, and two corners of the city reach south into St. Clair County. Schoolhouse Branch drains the northwest part of town and Canteen Creek drains the south. Both run west toward the Mississippi valley, and on lots near them the ground falls toward the water.
That shape is why drives here fail at the bottom first. Water gathers speed down the slope and dumps its load where the grade flattens out. A rebuilt drive needs a firm base at that low end and a clear path for water to leave before it gets there. If the drive drops toward a draw, say so when you call. It changes how the base is built.
Permits and the city
The City of Collinsville Community Development department answers permit questions at City Hall on South Center Street. Its published FAQ says a one-for-one driveway replacement, same size and same spot, does not need a permit. It also says converting a gravel drive to a paved surface does need one. Making a drive wider, longer or moving it is worth checking with them before we start.
Route 159 runs through the middle of town as Morrison Avenue and Vandalia Street, and Route 157 crosses the west side. Both are state roads, so a new entrance onto either goes through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Before Jon comes out
Know where your property line runs beside the drive, especially on a narrow lot. Point out any septic tank, well or buried line near it. Illinois law requires a call to JULIE before digging, so the utilities get marked before a bucket goes in.
If the drive is the start of a bigger job, a garage pad or a regrade of the yard, mention it now. One visit can price the lot. For the rest of what we do in town, see excavating in Collinsville.

Collinsville Gravel Driveways Questions
Not seeing yours? Call or text (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the common questions.
Do I need a permit to redo my gravel driveway in Collinsville?
According to the city's Community Development FAQ, a like-for-like replacement in the same size and spot does not need one. Paving a gravel drive does. For anything bigger, ask Community Development before work starts.
How do I stop gravel washing off my sloped drive?
Give the water somewhere to go before it gathers speed. A crown or cross slope, a packed base and an outlet at the side keep the rock in place. More rock alone just washes down faster.
How can I keep a gravel driveway on a budget?
Fix the base once instead of buying top rock every year. Keep the width to what you need. Do the drive alongside any other dirt work on the lot, so the machines only come once. Jon will tell you where the money matters and where it does not.
Can you build a gravel pad next to my garage?
Yes. A pad is built the same way as a drive, with the base sized for what will park on it.

Tell us the job
Call, text or send the form. A photograph of the ground and the way in tells us more than a description does — width of the gate, where the truck can sit, what is in the way.
Jon prices it himself
Jon quotes every job on this site. You are not talking to a call centre and you are not getting a number from someone who has not looked at the ground.
The machines turn up
Excavator, dozer, skid steer or the truck — whatever the job actually needs, with an operator who has run it before.
It gets left clean
Spoil hauled off or graded back, whichever was agreed. The job is not done while there is a pile sat in your yard.
