Excavation and Site Prep in Belleville, IL

Belleville is an established city with room to build at its edges, so excavation here mixes tight lots in town with open acreage outside it. A garage or addition footprint, a shop pad, a trench for a utility line: Jon cuts it to grade, hauls the spoil and leaves it ready for the next trade.

Excavation in Belleville

Two centuries of building in one city

Belleville was founded in 1814 and is the seat of St. Clair County. The city covers about 23 square miles and counted 42,404 people in 2020. Its oldest homes, in the Belleville Historic District, were built between 1830 and 1900, and newer neighbourhoods spread out from there.

That mix decides what an excavation job looks like. In the older parts of town it is careful work beside existing houses. At the edges and in the townships around the city, it is open ground for a new garage, a pole barn or a house.

Footprints for garages and additions

Most building projects here start with a hole. Jon digs footings and footprints for detached garages, room additions and new homes, cut to the depth and size the plans call for. 3D does not pour concrete, so the excavation is handed over clean and ready for the foundation crew.

On a city lot, the dirt that comes out has to go somewhere. Spoil is loaded straight into 3D's dump truck and hauled off, so the yard is not buried under a pile while the build goes on. Clean dirt can also be kept back for backfill once the walls are up.

Pads and trenches on acreage

Out past the city limits, the calls are for shop and pole barn pads, house sites and the trenches that serve them. A pad is cut and filled to a level grade, with the topsoil stripped and set aside rather than buried under the building.

Water, electric and drain lines need trenches from the house to the shop or out to the road. Those are dug to depth with the excavator and backfilled when the line is in. Clearing brush off the site first is covered under land clearing in Belleville.

Loess, clay and old mines

Belleville sits on loess, a wind-blown silt, over clay. It digs cleanly and holds a trench wall well when dry, but goes soft and heavy when wet. A site is graded so rain runs away from an open hole rather than into it.

There is history below that. By 1874 about a hundred shaft mines were working in and around Belleville. If you are building something large, the Illinois State Geological Survey's coal mine viewer shows mapped mines near an address, and it is worth checking before the plans are final.

Permits, site plans and JULIE

The City of Belleville's Health, Housing and Building Department issues building permits, and commercial projects go through the city's site plan review process. Outside the city, find out which office covers the property. Have the permit in hand before the dig is scheduled.

JULIE must be called at 811 at least 48 hours before digging, weekends and holidays not counted, and work has to begin within 14 calendar days of the call. The city marks its own water, sanitary and storm sewer lines along with the gas, power and phone companies.

Everything else Jon does in Belleville

Excavation is one part of the work. Old garages and sheds come down through demolition in Belleville, and broken drives, steps and patios through concrete removal. Wet yards are regraded under yard drainage in Belleville, and rock drives and pads are built through gravel driveways.

Jon quotes each job himself, on site, and the quote is free. The full service is on the excavation and site preparation page. Many jobs combine two or three of these, such as a garage teardown, a new footprint and a regrade, and those are priced as one figure. Photos and a sketch of the lot help him plan the visit.

Belleville and the towns nearby

Belleville is the farthest south of the Metro East towns 3D works in. Northeast of the city, excavation in O'Fallon serves a fast-growing city five miles from Scott Air Force Base, and north in Madison County, excavation in Collinsville is hillside digging above the bottoms. The surrounding areas page lists the rest. Every one of them is a short haul for the dump truck.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the guides.

Do you pour the foundation as well?

No. 3D digs the footings or basement to the size and depth on the plans and hauls the spoil, then the foundation crew takes over. Backfill around the finished walls can be done afterward.

Do I need a permit to dig for a garage in Belleville?

A new garage or addition needs a building permit from the City of Belleville's Health, Housing and Building Department. Outside the city, check which office covers the property. Get it before the dig is scheduled.

How deep does a trench need to be?

It depends on what is going in it and what the code or the utility asks for. The guide to frost line and trench depth in Illinois covers the usual depths. Jon digs to whatever the plan or inspector requires.
