Gravel Driveways and Parking Pads in Belleville, IL
On Belleville's city streets most drives are poured, so gravel work tends to come from the edges: acreage in the townships around the city, a lane back to a shop, a pad for a camper or work truck. Jon builds them on a compacted base, rebuilds the worn ones and hauls the rock on 3D's own truck.

Gravel Driveways in Belleville
A county seat with country around it
Belleville has been the seat of St. Clair County since the legislature moved it there from Cahokia, and today it is a city of about 42,000. State routes 13, 15, 158, 159, 161 and 177 all run through it, with Interstates 64 and 255 at its edges.
Step past the city limits, though, and the land opens up into townships with homes on a few acres. Southwestern Illinois College's main campus is out in unincorporated St. Clair Township, just beyond the line. That ring of larger lots is where most gravel drives in the Belleville area are.
Building from the base up
A drive is only as good as what holds it up. Topsoil and soft ground come out first, because loess and clay turn to mush when they are wet. CA-6 base rock goes down next, compacted in lifts and shaped with a crown so water runs off to the sides.
The top goes on last, either CA-7 or a chip rock, thin enough to stay put and thick enough to cover the base. The guide to the best gravel for Illinois driveways explains why that order matters. Skipping the base is a common reason a new drive ruts in its first spring.
Pads for the camper, trailer or truck
Often the job is a pad, not a full drive. A spot beside the garage for a boat, a widened apron for a second car, or a turnaround so nobody backs out onto a busy road.
These are built the same way as a drive, on a real base. Say what will park there when you call, because a loaded camper or a work trailer needs more rock under it than a sedan. If an old concrete pad is in the way, concrete removal in Belleville can take it out first.
When a worn drive needs reshaping
A rock drive that ruts and potholes is not always a lost cause. If the base underneath is still firm, the crown has usually been driven flat and water now runs down the middle. Regrading it, cutting out the holes and adding a layer of new rock usually brings it back.
If ruts return every spring in the same place, the base has gone soft there and has to be dug out and rebuilt. Jon will tell you which kind you have. Soggy ground beside the drive is often part of it, and yard drainage in Belleville can deal with that.
Culverts and who owns the road
Where a drive crosses a roadside ditch, it needs a culvert under it, set at the right depth and grade so water keeps moving. Jon sets the pipe and builds the entrance over it with base rock.
Who you ask first depends on the road. Inside the city it is the City of Belleville. Outside, it may be the township road district or St. Clair County, and on a state route it is IDOT. Some want to approve the pipe size, so ask before the work is booked. The driveway culvert guide goes through sizing.
Rock, truck and one figure
Because 3D hauls its own rock in its own dump truck, the material and the work come from the same place. Jon prices the job himself after seeing it, with rock and hauling in a single free figure. More on the service is on the gravel driveways page.
Before digging for a culvert or a new entrance, JULIE is called at 811 so buried lines get marked. Digging, demolition and drainage around town are on the Belleville excavating page. Tell him how long the drive is, what will use it and whether a culvert is needed, and send a photo of the entrance. That is usually enough to plan the rock and the truck loads before he comes out.

What that covers
- New gravel drives. Built on compacted CA-6 base with a CA-7 or chip top.
- Parking pads. Room for a camper, trailer or second car on a proper base.
- Worn drives. Flattened lanes regraded, potholes cut out and fresh rock spread.
- Entrance culverts. Pipe set under the entrance so the ditch keeps flowing.

North of Belleville, gravel driveways in Collinsville often means building on a slope above the bottoms. Farther east in Madison County, gravel driveways in Highland is mostly country lanes on farm ground. For every other town on 3D's route, see the surrounding areas page. Rock for all of them is hauled on 3D's own truck, so the drive and the material come from one place.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the guides.
What rock do you use for a gravel drive?
CA-6 base rock, compacted in layers and crowned so it sheds water, with a top of CA-7 or a chip rock. The base carries the weight; the top gives a clean surface. A thin top over a thick base outlasts the reverse.
Do I need permission to add a drive entrance near Belleville?
Ask whoever maintains the road. That is the City of Belleville inside city limits, the township road district or St. Clair County outside it, and IDOT on a state route. Some want to approve the culvert size.
Can you replace an old concrete pad with gravel?
Yes. The concrete is broken out and hauled away, the soft ground beneath removed, and a compacted rock pad built in its place. The tear-out, the rock and the hauling are all priced together in one figure.
Do you do asphalt?
No. 3D builds and repairs gravel drives and rock pads only. If you plan to pave later, a well-compacted rock base is exactly what the paving crew will want underneath, so the work is not wasted.
