Gravel Driveways Around Troy
Plenty of homes in and around Troy sit well back from the road. A house set back like that means a long drive. A long drive on soft ground means ruts by April and a bill for rock every year. That cycle is the most common reason people in Troy call us.
We break the cycle by fixing what is underneath. The soft soil and old, muddy rock are dug out. A base of heavier rock goes down in lifts and is packed tight. The surface rock goes on top and is shaped with a crown, so water leaves from the sides instead of sitting in the wheel tracks.
On a long drive the shape matters as much as the rock. A low spot halfway down holds water and fails first. We set the grade along the whole length so there is nowhere for a puddle to sit. The finished drive takes cars, delivery trucks and the odd trailer without breaking up.
You can read how we approach every build on the gravel driveways and rock page. When you are ready, call or text Jon with a photo and rough length. The quote is free.

Gravel Driveways in Troy: What to Know
How Troy ground treats a gravel drive
Troy sits in south-central Madison County, mostly across Jarvis and Pin Oak townships. Most of the city drains east into small tributaries of Silver Creek. The far west side drains the other way, toward Canteen Creek, which heads southwest to the Mississippi valley. Where a lot sits low or flat, the soil can stay wet long after a storm.
Slow drainage is hard on gravel. Water that cannot get away soaks the soil under the rock, and the first heavy truck pushes the rock down into it. A drive here needs to sit a little above the ground around it, with somewhere for the water to go. Where the yard itself needs reshaping to carry water away, that is a grading job, and the same crew does it.
Gravel driveway installation for acreage and shop lanes
Out past the subdivisions there are country homes on several acres, often with a shop or pole barn behind the house. The lane to that building carries heavier traffic than the house drive. Think of a pickup with a trailer, a delivery truck, maybe a skid steer of your own. Tell us what will use it. The base gets built for the heaviest thing that will cross it.
If the lane runs through brush or along an old fence row, the clearing can be done first. The ground is then stripped, based and rocked in one job, with no second contractor to schedule.
Roads, entrances and who to ask
Several kinds of road meet driveways in and around Troy. Illinois Route 162 runs through the middle of town as Center Street, Market Street and Edwardsville Road. U.S. Route 40 crosses the south side on its way east to Highland. An entrance onto a state or U.S. route needs a permit from the Illinois Department of Transportation. Streets inside the city are a question for the City of Troy. Out in the country, a township road commissioner looks after the township roads.
Sort out the entrance before the work is booked. Then we can build to what that office wants. More on the town on our excavating in Troy page.

Troy Gravel Driveways Questions
Not seeing yours? Call or text (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the common questions.
How do I install a gravel driveway that lasts?
Take out the topsoil and soft spots, put down a base of heavier rock and pack it, then add the surface rock and shape a crown. Most failed drives skipped the first two steps. Our guide on how to build a gravel driveway goes through each one.
How long does a gravel driveway take to build in Troy?
A short town drive can often be finished in a day. A long lane on acreage takes longer, mostly because of the digging and the number of loads. Wet weather can push the start back, because working soaked ground makes a weaker base.
Can you fix the drive without starting over?
Often, yes. If the base is firm, we regrade it, cut out the potholes and spread fresh rock. If it is soft all the way down, Jon will tell you plainly that a rebuild is the better spend.
Do you make the trip to Troy for a small driveway job?
Yes. Troy is roughly an hour from our yard in Hillsboro, and we work in the Metro East most weeks. Send the job over and Jon will say when he can get to it.
