Demolition and Debris Removal in Highland, IL
Highland is an old town that has stayed close to the same size for years, so demolition here is mostly about replacing what is already standing. A garage past saving, a rotten deck, a shed or barn on a rural lot outside town. Jon takes it down, hauls it away and leaves the ground graded.

Demolition in Highland
A Swiss town that kept its shape
Swiss-German settlers founded Highland in 1837 and first called it Helvetia. It sits on the eastern side of Madison County, about 30 miles east of St. Louis, and its population barely moved between 2010 and 2020, holding just under 10,000. Interstate 70 crosses the north part of the city, and Routes 143 and 160 bring you in from the farm country on either side.
A town that is not booming tends to replace things rather than add them. Most of the demolition calls here are old garages, sheds and porches on established lots in town, and outbuildings on the farm ground that surrounds it.
The old garage that costs more to fix than to replace
On Highland's older streets, the most common version of the job is a detached garage that has outlived its roof. Before anything is booked, Jon checks how close it stands to the property line, the neighbor's fence and the overhead wires.
It comes down in pieces and goes straight into the truck. If a new garage is going up in its place, the old slab comes out too and the spot is left graded for the concrete crew. The garage and shed demolition cost guide sets out what changes the figure.
Silver Lake, Sugar Creek and low ground
Highland Silver Lake is a reservoir on the East Fork of Silver Creek, and the city limits run about five miles north to take in the whole lake. The town itself drains two ways, south toward Sugar Creek and northwest toward the East Fork.
Low ground near a creek can stay soft well into spring, and a loaded machine leaves ruts in it. So a tear-down on wet ground sometimes waits a few dry days. Once the building is gone, the spot is shaped so water moves off it, and yard drainage in Highland can deal with a wet yard at the same time.
The city's demolition permit
The City of Highland publishes its own demolition permit application for residential and commercial work. Ask the city what your building needs before a date is fixed. If you are not sure which form applies, the city's building office can point you to the right one.
The utility has to disconnect power, gas and water to the structure first. JULIE marks the buried lines before anything is dug, and the law wants at least two working days of notice. A line that runs out to a detached garage or a barn is easy to forget, so point it out during the site visit.
Barns and sheds on the rural lots
Outside the city, Highland gives way to farm ground and acreage lots, and that is where the bigger buildings are. Old barns, machine sheds and lean-tos come down here, usually with plenty of room for the truck to pull right alongside.
Older outbuildings sometimes have asbestos in the roofing or siding, and 3D does not do houses that need asbestos abatement. Jon will tell you if he sees it. When brush and volunteer trees have grown up around a forgotten building, land clearing in Highland takes them out with it.
One price with the hauling in it
Jon gives a free estimate and prices the job himself, with the loading, hauling and grading in one figure. There is no dumpster to rent and nothing left in a pile for you to deal with later. Send a photo of the building and the way in, and say what the spot should be afterwards. That tells him which machine to bring and how much fill the hole will need.
If the cleared spot is becoming a parking area, a gravel drive or pad in Highland can follow. The rest of the work 3D does in and around town is on the Highland excavating page.

Highland is about 11 miles east of Troy along US 40, and 3D works the whole stretch in between. Demolition in Troy covers barns and garages on the growing edge of that town, and demolition in Glen Carbon handles the subdivisions farther west. Marine and Pierron, a few miles out on Route 143, are on the same run. Every town 3D reaches from Hillsboro is on the service area page.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the guides.
Does Highland require a permit to tear down a garage?
The City of Highland has its own demolition permit application for residential and commercial work. Ask the city what your building needs before a date is set, and have the utility disconnect any service to it first.
Can you take down a barn outside the city limits?
Yes. Barns, machine sheds and other outbuildings on the rural lots around Highland are a regular job. The building is pulled down, loaded and hauled off, and the ground is graded when it is gone.
Our lot near the creek is soft. Can you still work there?
Usually, but on wet ground it can pay to wait for a few dry days so the machines do not rut the yard. Jon will look at the ground and suggest the timing when he comes out.
Do you remove the concrete floor too?
If you want it gone, yes. The slab and footings are broken out and hauled with the rest of the debris, and the hole is filled and graded. If the slab is staying for a new building, say so.
Will you tear down an old house?
3D's work is outbuildings, garages, sheds, decks and pools. Houses that need asbestos abatement are not something 3D takes on, and you will be told that on the first visit.
Other work he takes on
Most jobs end up being two or three of these at once, and they get quoted together.
