Hauling Around Effingham
Most calls about rock delivery in Effingham start with a problem, not a product. A drive that has gone thin. A shed that needs a firm base. A low corner of the yard that holds water. A farm lane that turns to mud every spring. The right material depends on which of those you have.
So the first thing Jon asks is what the material is for, not how many tons you want. Tell him what will drive or stand on it and how big the area is. He will tell you which rock or dirt suits, and he will work out the amount with you before the truck is loaded.
Effingham is about 55 minutes from our yard in Hillsboro. That is close enough to be a normal run, and far enough that it pays to plan the trip well. If you need rock brought in and an old pile of spoil or broken concrete taken out, both can be booked as one job.
The hauling and material delivery page covers how delivery works across our whole area. For the rest of the work we take on in town, from grading to trenching, see excavating in Effingham.

What the Job Covers
- Crushed rock and gravel for drives, lanes and pads
- Fill dirt for low spots and building ground up
- Topsoil for lawns and the top layer of a regrade
- Sand and bulk mulch by the truckload
- Spoil, old concrete and brush hauled away
- The amount worked out with you before loading
- Spreading with the skid steer, quoted on request
Hauling in Effingham: What to Know
Gravel delivery in Effingham: picking the right rock
Driveway rock does two jobs, and they are not always done by the same rock. The base has to pack hard and carry weight. The top has to stay put under tires and let water run off. For most drives around here that is CA-6, a crushed rock with its fines left in, used for the base and often right to the top. In this part of Illinois much of the crushed rock sold is limestone, which is why people often ask for crushed limestone by name.
Clean rock such as CA-7 has the fines screened out, so water passes straight through it. It earns its place around a drain pipe or where water has to escape. It is a poor choice as the only layer on soft ground, because it rolls and sinks. Our guide to gravel for Illinois driveways explains the codes in more detail. If you are not sure, describe the job and Jon will name the rock.
Dirt, sand and mulch on the same truck
Rock is not the only thing we bring. Fill dirt raises ground and packs firm. Topsoil is the soft, dark layer that grass grows in, so it goes on last and never under a drive or a pad. Sand and bulk mulch come by the load as well. The fill dirt vs topsoil guide sorts out which one goes where.
Effingham County has a lot of farm ground. Around a machine shed, a field entrance or a building pad, the job often needs dirt to raise the spot and rock to finish it. Those come as separate loads, in that order, so the rock is not tipped onto ground that still has to be built up.
How much to order, in plain terms
You do not need to know tons. You need three measurements and a purpose. Measure how long the area is, how wide it is, and how deep you want the new material. Then say what it is for: a new drive, a top-up on an old one, a shed base or a low spot.
A top-up on a firm drive takes a thin layer. A new drive on bare ground takes a full base and more rock. A low spot nearly always takes more fill than it looks like it needs, because dirt packs down as it settles. Jon turns your numbers into loads before the truck leaves the yard. On a run to Effingham that matters, because coming up short means a second trip.
Where the truck can tip, and the roads around Effingham
Getting to town is easy. Interstate 70 and Interstate 57 meet at Effingham, and US 40, US 45 and Illinois Routes 32 and 33 run through it. The harder part is the last stretch to your pile. A loaded dump truck needs a firm path in, room to raise the bed and nothing overhead. Mark the spot with a stake, and keep it clear of septic tanks, wells and wires.
Some rural roads in the county carry posted weight limits in late winter and spring, and low ground toward the Little Wabash River can stay soft after rain. If either applies, say so. We can tip nearer the road and spread from there with the skid steer, or the material can be spread and leveled on a drive with a crown so water runs off. See skid steer and equipment work for that side of the job.

Effingham Hauling Questions
Not seeing yours? Call or text (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the common questions.
Do you deliver crushed limestone in Effingham?
We deliver crushed rock and gravel by the truckload, and much of the crushed rock sold in this part of Illinois is limestone. Tell Jon what it is for and he will say which grade suits the job.
Can you bring topsoil to Effingham as well as rock?
Yes. Topsoil, fill dirt, sand and mulch come by the truckload too. If a job needs dirt and rock, they come as separate loads in the order the work needs them.
Is Effingham too far for a single load of gravel?
No. It is about 55 minutes from the yard in Hillsboro. If you also have spoil or old concrete to go, booking both together gets more out of the trip.
Will you spread and level the rock on my Effingham drive?
Yes, if you ask for it in the quote. The skid steer spreads and levels the rock, and on a drive it is shaped so water runs off the sides.
What should I have ready when I call for a delivery?
The address, the material, what it is for, and the length, width and depth of the area. A photo of the drop spot and the way in helps Jon price it.
