Concrete Removal in Collinsville, IL

Collinsville is an older city, and a lot of its concrete has been through more winters than anyone wants to count. Jon breaks out cracked drives, sunken patios, walks and steps, hauls the pieces away and leaves the ground graded or a rock base down for the new pour.

Concrete removal in Collinsville

An older city on coal country

Collinsville was settled in the 1810s and grew up on coal. The Illinois State Geological Survey records the Herrin Coal as the only seam mined around here, and its map of the Collinsville area shows 21 located mines. The census counted 24,366 people in 2020, a little down from 2010.

Most of the concrete that fails here fails for ordinary reasons: age, water and tree roots. But if a slab cracked at the same time as the walls of the house, it is worth asking about mine subsidence before blaming the concrete.

Driveways that dropped at the garage

The most common Collinsville call is a driveway that has sunk at the garage, cracked across the middle or broken up at the street. The city's own guidance says a one-for-one replacement at the same size and location does not need a permit, while switching from gravel to a paved surface does.

Jon breaks the old drive out, loads it and hauls it off, then sets a rock base at the height your concrete contractor asks for. 3D does not pour the new one. The concrete removal cost guide covers what drives the price.

Patios, walks and back steps

According to the city's community development FAQ, a concrete patio with no new roof over it does not need a permit, and neither do private walks at a house. That makes these the easiest jobs to schedule.

Back yards on older Collinsville lots can be tight. A skid steer fits through a narrower gate than an excavator, and the broken concrete is carried out to the truck instead of dragged across the grass. Whatever ruts the machine leaves are smoothed before 3D goes. Steps by the back door are often thicker than they look, with a footing under them, and that gets priced on site.

Hillside lots and where the water runs

Canteen Creek drains the south of the city and flows west toward the Mississippi valley, and Schoolhouse Branch drains the northwest. Many lots tip toward one or the other, and a patio built against that slope often has water running under it every time it rains.

Once the slab is out, the ground can be reshaped so the water goes around the new pour instead of under it. Yard drainage in Collinsville covers swales and drain lines, and grading in Collinsville covers bigger reshaping. A patio that was sending water toward the house is worth regrading even if the new one goes back in the same place.

Locates and the grading permit

JULIE is notified before any breaking or digging, and Illinois law asks for at least two working days of notice. Gas and water services often run under the drive or the front walk. Point out sprinkler lines, buried downspout pipes or a dog fence too, since private lines like those are not marked by the utilities.

The city does issue a land disturbance and grading permit. If the job grows past a slab into reshaping part of the lot, ask the Community Development office at City Hall what applies before work starts.

What 3D leaves for the concrete crew

When 3D leaves, the old concrete is gone and the base is ready, or the ground is graded for seed. Jon gives one free figure for the whole job, with the hauling in it. Nothing is left in a pile in your drive.

If you are swapping the old slab for rock instead, gravel driveways in Collinsville covers that. If a garage or shed is coming off the slab first, demolition in Collinsville handles the building. The rest of the work in town is on the Collinsville excavating page.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the guides.

Do I need a permit to replace my driveway in Collinsville?

The city's guidance says a one-for-one replacement at the same size and location does not need one. Changing a gravel drive to a paved one does. Call Community Development at City Hall if your job does not fit either case.

Do you pour concrete after the old slab comes out?

No. 3D removes and hauls the old concrete and sets a rock base, or grades the ground for grass. Your concrete contractor does the pour, and the base is left at the height they ask for.

Could old coal mines be why my slab cracked?

Most slab cracks come from water, age and roots. Coal was mined under parts of the Collinsville area, though, so if the house walls cracked at the same time, it is worth asking about mine subsidence before replacing the concrete.

Can you get into a small fenced back yard?

Usually. A skid steer fits through a narrower gate than an excavator, and the broken concrete is carried out to the truck. Tell Jon the gate width or send a photo.
