Concrete Removal in Hillsboro, IL

Hillsboro is home for 3D Excavating, so the concrete calls here come from neighbors. Old drives on in-town lots, patios that have sunk, steps pulling off the porch and slabs left on farm ground. Jon breaks it out, hauls it away and leaves the ground graded or a rock base ready.

Concrete removal in Hillsboro

The county seat and its older lots

Founded in 1823, Hillsboro is the seat of Montgomery County. Routes 16 and 127 run through the middle of town, and the Middle Fork of Shoal Creek runs just west of it. About 5,900 people lived here at the 2020 census. Lake Hillsboro sits northeast of downtown, and Lake Glenn Shoals lies to the north, inside the city limits.

A town that old has plenty of tired concrete. Narrow drives poured for smaller cars, front steps that have dropped away from the porch, sidewalks broken by tree roots and slabs left where a garage used to stand.

Flat ground and slow drainage

The ground around Hillsboro is broad, nearly level prairie. The Cowden soil series, which the USDA describes from a site near Butler in this county, is poorly drained with slow permeability. Water that gets under a slab here tends to stay there.

That is a big reason slabs crack and sink. Taking out the old concrete is the easy part. Clearing out the soft clay and building a proper rock base under the replacement is what keeps the new one from following the old one down. That holds for a patio or a walk as much as for a drive.

Driveways in town and out in the county

In town, the job is usually an old drive that has broken up at the street or at the garage. Out in the county, it can be a farm lot, an apron at a machine shed or a slab nobody needs anymore.

Jon breaks it out, loads it and hauls it off in the dump truck. Then he either grades the ground for seed or spreads a rock base at the height your concrete contractor gives him. 3D does not pour concrete. If you would rather go to gravel, gravel driveways in Hillsboro covers that.

Permits at City Hall

The City of Hillsboro's building permit and zoning compliance application, from City Hall on South Main Street, lists driveways and parking lots among the work it covers, along with decks and pools. Ask the city what your replacement needs before the concrete crew is booked.

JULIE marks the buried lines before anything is dug. Illinois law asks for at least two working days of notice, not counting weekends, holidays or the day you call. On older lots, gas and water services often run right under the front walk.

Where the broken concrete goes

Clean concrete is not treated as ordinary trash in Illinois. The state EPA classes uncontaminated broken concrete without protruding rebar as clean construction or demolition debris, which can be used as fill at a permitted site.

That is one reason the old concrete is loaded on its own and kept free of dirt, wood and trash where possible. You do not have to rent a dumpster or find a second hauler. The concrete removal cost guide shows what goes into the price.

A local price

Because 3D is based in Hillsboro, Jon can come and look without a long drive. He gives one free figure with the hauling and the base or grading in it, and he quotes every job himself. Send a photo of the slab and the way in from the street, and say what is going in next. That is enough to start.

If water was what ruined the slab, yard drainage in Hillsboro can deal with that in the same visit. The other work 3D does around town is on the Hillsboro excavating page.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the guides.

Do I need a permit to replace a driveway in Hillsboro?

The City of Hillsboro's building permit and zoning compliance application lists driveways and parking lots among the work it covers. Ask City Hall on South Main Street what your job needs before the concrete crew is booked.

Do you pour concrete?

No. 3D breaks out and hauls the old concrete and leaves either a rock base at the height your concrete contractor asks for or graded ground for seed. The pour is done by a concrete crew.

Why do slabs sink so much around here?

The soil around Hillsboro is flat and slow to drain, so water sits under concrete and softens the clay. A rock base under the replacement gives it firmer footing than the old clay did.

Can you remove old slabs out in the county?

Yes. Aprons, old shed floors and farm-lot slabs are broken out, loaded and hauled off, and the ground is graded so it can be farmed, mowed or built on.
