Yard Drainage in Hillsboro, IL
Hillsboro is 3D's home town, and Jon knows its two kinds of wet yard well. On the flat ground the water soaks in a few inches, hits tight subsoil and sits. Toward the creek the ground falls away and the water runs too fast. Each one gets a different fix.

Yard Drainage in Hillsboro
The county seat on two kinds of ground
Hillsboro was founded in 1823 and is the Montgomery County seat. The city limits reach more than six miles north to take in Lake Glenn Shoals, a reservoir on the Middle Fork of Shoal Creek, and Lake Hillsboro sits on a smaller branch northeast of the centre.
Near those waters, and along the Middle Fork just west of town, the ground is broken and hilly. Away from them it flattens into the broad upland that the rest of the county is farmed on. A yard's problem depends a lot on which of the two it sits on.
Flat yards on claypan soil
The soil scientists' reference profile for Cowden soil was taken in Montgomery County, about two miles northwest of Butler, just up the road. Cowden forms on broad, nearly level ground, and the federal description rates it poorly drained with slow permeability. In plain terms, water gets through the topsoil and then stops on a dense, clay-rich layer underneath.
On ground like that, a drain pipe alone does little, because the water barely moves through the soil to reach it. What works is surface grade. Jon shapes the yard so rain runs off before it can soak in and sit, and gives the low spots a swale with steady fall to somewhere lower.
Slopes toward the creek
On the hillier lots the trouble is speed. Roof water and lawn runoff gather on the slope and cut channels, especially where downspouts all point the same way. Spreading that water out, or burying the downspouts and carrying them down to a protected outlet, keeps the yard from washing away a little more each spring. A strip of rock where a pipe comes out stops the outlet from digging its own hole.
Where a slope needs a bigger reshape, that is grading and dirt work in Hillsboro. The yard grading cost guide covers what changes the price.
Culverts under drives in town
Where a Hillsboro street has an open ditch instead of a curb, each driveway crosses it on a culvert. When the pipe silts up or sags, water stands in the ditch and backs into the yard. Replacing it is usually a short job.
In the city right of way, the City of Hillsboro asks for a culvert and driveway permit, with a sketch showing where the pipe goes, its length and what it is made of, and the finished work is inspected. City Hall is at 447 South Main Street. The driveway culvert guide covers the rest.
JULIE, even close to home
Before any drain trench, a JULIE request goes in on 811 or 800-892-0123 at least two working days ahead. Each utility then marks its own lines on the ground with paint or flags. Waiting for the marks costs a couple of days, while a cut gas or fibre line costs far more.
Older Hillsboro lots often have lines nobody remembers, such as an old downspout pipe or a feed to a garage. Those belong to the owner, so no utility will mark them. If you know of any, tell Jon before he digs.
Small jobs are worth doing here
Because 3D is based in Hillsboro, a single downspout line or one wet corner is not too small to come out for. Jon looks at it himself and gives you one free figure. Call or text, ideally with a photo of the yard after a rain. A short video of water running across the lawn shows the problem even better than a still picture.
If a patio or slab is trapping water, concrete removal in Hillsboro can go on the same quote. Everything else 3D does in its home town is on the Hillsboro page.

- Surface grading. Flat claypan yards shaped so rain runs off instead of sitting.
- Swales with fall. Low strips given a steady grade to lower ground or a ditch.
- Downspout lines. Roof water buried and carried to a protected outlet down the slope.
- Driveway culverts. Silted or sagging pipes replaced and the ditch reshaped.

From the Hillsboro yard, Jon covers the rest of Montgomery County and south into the Metro East. The same drainage work is done in Highland and Troy, and for drives that wash out on this ground, see gravel driveways in Hillsboro. Litchfield, Nokomis and the smaller towns around the county are all within easy reach of the Hillsboro yard, and the same work goes south from there into the Metro East.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the guides.
Why doesn't the water soak into my Hillsboro yard?
A lot of Montgomery County sits on soils like Cowden, which have a dense, clay-rich layer a short way down. Water soaks through the topsoil and stops there, so a flat yard stays wet. The fix is usually surface grading that moves the water off before it has a chance to sit.
Will a French drain fix a wet yard on claypan?
Often not by itself. Water moves so slowly through tight subsoil that a buried pipe collects very little. Regrading and a swale with steady fall do more of the work. Buried lines still go in where they help, such as carrying downspout water away from the house.
Do I need a permit to replace a culvert in Hillsboro?
In the city right of way, yes. The City of Hillsboro has a culvert and driveway permit that asks for a sketch of the location, length and pipe material, and the finished work is inspected. On county or township roads, ask the road's owner.
Is one downspout line too small a job?
Not in Hillsboro. 3D is based here, so short jobs are worth doing, and the machines do not have far to travel. Jon still looks at it in person and gives one free quote before any work is booked.
Do you do gutters or basement waterproofing?
No. 3D works in the ground outside: grading, swales, buried drain lines and culverts. Gutters and waterproofing are other trades. Fixing the grade outside is the first step for a damp basement wall, and if water still gets in afterwards, a waterproofing contractor is the next call.
Other work he takes on
Most jobs end up being two or three of these at once, and they get quoted together.
