Gravel Driveways in Litchfield, IL

Around Litchfield a gravel drive is often long: a lane back to a house near Lake Lou Yaeger, a drive across flat ground off a township road, a pad for a shop. Jon builds them on a proper rock base, brings the rock on 3D's own dump truck, and fixes drives that have gone soft or rutted.

Gravel Driveways in Litchfield

A railroad town with country drives all round

Litchfield started as Huntsville and was renamed in 1855 after Electus Bachus Litchfield, whose family helped bring the Terre Haute and Alton Railroad's shops to town. Later came Route 66, still marked by places like the Ariston Cafe and the Sky View Theater, and then I-55 along the west edge of the city.

In town, drives are short and sit close to the street. The gravel work is mostly at the edges and out in the country: homes set well back on acreage, lake lots to the north, farm lanes and shop pads. Those are the drives that rut, wash and sink if the base under them is thin.

Lake lots and long lanes

Lake Lou Yaeger lies northeast of the city on the West Fork of Shoal Creek, and Litchfield's city limits run about five miles north to take in most of it. Houses around a lake like that tend to sit back from the road, so the drive can be a few hundred feet of rock.

A long lane is priced mostly on length, width and how much soft ground has to come out first. Jon walks it with you, notes where it dips and where water crosses, and gives one figure with the rock and hauling in it. The gravel driveway cost guide lays out what moves that number.

Building it base first

A drive that lasts starts by taking the topsoil off, because black dirt under rock turns to mush. The base is CA-6, a crushed rock with fines that packs hard when it is spread and compacted. It is shaped with a crown or a cross slope so water runs off the sides instead of along the wheel tracks.

The top goes on last: CA-7 or a chip rock, depending on how it will be used and what you like walking on. The guide to driveway gravel in Illinois explains the difference between them.

Flat ground and the spring thaw

Montgomery County is mostly broad, level upland, and the reference site for Cowden soil, a poorly drained, slow-draining type, is in this county. On ground like that, water has nowhere quick to go, and a drive laid at field level sits in it every spring.

So out here a drive is built up slightly above the ground around it, with a ditch or a low side for water to leave by. A drive that already ruts every thaw usually needs the soft spots dug out and rebuilt rather than more rock on top. Driveway leveling and regrading covers when a reshape is enough.

Township roads and the culvert at the end

Montgomery County has about a thousand miles of township roads, far more than its county and state highways together. Most rural drives near Litchfield meet one of them, and the road commissioner for that township is who approves a new entrance and the culvert under it.

County highways go to the Montgomery County Highway Department on Route 185 in Hillsboro, state routes to IDOT, and streets in town to the City of Litchfield. Find out which before the work is booked. Jon sets the culvert, builds the entrance over it and grades the ditch either side.

Rock on 3D's own truck

3D hauls its own rock, so there is no waiting on a separate supplier to deliver it. The quote is free, and Jon gives it himself after looking at the drive. Call or text with the address and, if you can, a photo of the worst stretch. Say what uses the drive, from family cars to a grain truck, because that sets how heavy the base needs to be.

If an old shed or a dead tree line is in the way of a new drive, land clearing in Litchfield or demolition in Litchfield can go on the same quote. Everything else 3D does here is on the Litchfield page.

What it includes

What that covers

  • New gravel drives. Topsoil stripped, CA-6 base compacted and crowned, CA-7 or chip on top.
  • Re-rocking worn drives. Ruts and potholes cut out, the crown brought back and fresh rock spread.
  • Parking and shop pads. Level rock pads for vehicles, trailers or a building site.
  • Culverts at the road. Entrance culverts set at grade with the ditch shaped either side.

Litchfield and the towns nearby

Litchfield is a short haul from 3D's yard in Hillsboro, and Jon builds drives across the county and beyond. See gravel driveways in Hillsboro for the county seat and gravel driveways in Greenville for Bond County to the south. Across this flat stretch of central Illinois the problems are much the same, soft ground in spring and water with nowhere to go, so a drive is built up and drained the same careful way wherever it is.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the guides.

What rock do you use for a driveway in Litchfield?

CA-6 for the base, because it compacts hard and carries weight, then CA-7 or a chip rock on top. Which top rock depends on how the drive is used and what you prefer. That gets talked through when the drive is quoted, with the rock in the price.

Who approves a new driveway entrance on a rural road near Litchfield?

Whoever owns the road. Most rural roads in Montgomery County are township roads, so that is usually the township road commissioner. County highways go to the Montgomery County Highway Department, state routes to IDOT, and city streets to the City of Litchfield.

My lane turns to mud every spring. Will more rock fix it?

Usually not for long. If the base has failed, new rock just sinks into the soft ground. The soft spots need digging out and rebuilding, and the lane may need raising a little above the field with somewhere for water to drain. Jon will tell you which after he looks.

Do you pave driveways?

No. 3D builds and repairs gravel drives only, with no asphalt. A well-built rock base is also what any later paving would sit on, so if you plan to pave in a few years, a gravel drive built properly now is not wasted.

Do you deliver rock without installing it?

Yes. Rock, dirt and sand go out by the truckload on 3D's dump truck, and it can be spread with the skid steer if you want. Say roughly how much ground it needs to cover, and the right amount can be worked out from that.
