Gravel Driveways Around Greenville, IL

Around Greenville, most gravel drives are outside the town itself: a new house on a few acres, a lane off a township road, a drive near Governor Bond Lake that has gone to potholes. Jon builds new drives on a compacted base, rebuilds worn ones, and hauls the rock on 3D's own truck.

Gravel Driveways in Greenville

An old county seat ringed by farm roads

Greenville is one of the older towns in this part of Illinois. George Davidson founded it in 1815 on a bluff above Little Shoal Creek, and it became the Bond County seat in 1821. Today it has Greenville University, a federal prison, and I-70 and US-40 running past the south side of downtown.

Beyond the edge of town it is farm ground, and that is where most gravel drives are. Bond County has around 530 miles of township roads against about 117 of county highway, so a house in the country nearly always meets a township road at the end of a rock drive.

Near the lake and on the edge of town

Governor Bond Lake, a 775-acre reservoir named for Illinois' first governor, has supplied Greenville's water since the late 1960s and is used for recreation too. Homes near it, and on the acreage lots around town, tend to have longer drives and often a parking pad or a turnaround for a boat or a trailer.

Those extras are built the same way as the drive itself, on a compacted base, and priced with it. Say what will park there when you ask for a quote, because a loaded trailer needs more under it than a car does.

What goes under the rock

The surface is the part you see, but the drive is only as good as what holds it up. The topsoil and any soft ground come out first, then spreads CA-6 base rock and compacts it in lifts. The base is shaped so it sheds water to the sides.

The top layer goes on last, either CA-7 or a chip rock. It gives a clean, even surface over the base without being loose enough to rut. A thin top over a thick base outlasts a thick top over nothing. The step-by-step guide to building a gravel driveway follows the same order.

When a worn drive only needs reshaping

Not every bad drive needs rebuilding. If the base under it is still firm, the trouble is often that the crown has been driven flat, water now runs down the middle, and potholes follow. Grading the surface back into shape, cutting out the holes and adding a layer of fresh rock will usually bring it back.

If the ruts return every spring, the base has gone soft and needs rebuilding where it failed. Jon will look and tell you which one your drive is. The driveway leveling and regrading guide covers the difference.

Entrances and culverts on Bond County roads

Where the drive meets the road, the road's owner has a say. On a township road that is the township road district. County highways go to the Bond County engineer's office on South Fourth Street in Greenville, state routes to IDOT, and city streets to the City of Greenville.

Most country entrances cross the road ditch, so they need a culvert under them. Jon sets the pipe at the right depth and grade, builds the entrance over it with base rock and shapes the ditch so water keeps moving. The driveway culvert guide explains sizing and approvals.

The rock, the truck and the price

3D hauls the rock in its own dump truck, so the drive is built and the material brought in by the same outfit. Jon gives one free figure with the rock and hauling in it, after seeing the drive. Call or text with the address and a photo. Mention anything heavy that will use it, such as a delivery truck, a camper or farm equipment.

If you only need rock dropped, that is hauling and delivery in Greenville. If the drive runs through brush or trees, land clearing in Greenville can open it up first. Everything else is on the Greenville page.

What it includes

What that covers

  • New drives and lanes. Topsoil stripped, CA-6 compacted and crowned, CA-7 or chip on top.
  • Pads and turnarounds. Room for a trailer, a boat or extra cars, built on the same base.
  • Regrade and re-rock. Crowns restored, potholes cut out and fresh rock spread.
  • Entrance culverts. Pipe set under the entrance with the road ditch shaped either side.
Greenville and nearby

Greenville and the towns nearby

Greenville lies south of 3D's base in Hillsboro, and Jon covers the towns around it as well. See gravel driveways in Litchfield and gravel driveways in Highland for the same work nearby, or the service area page for the rest. Outside Greenville the land is mostly farm fields, so a drive built a little above the field, with somewhere for water to run off, holds up best through a wet spring.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Not seeing yours? Call (217) 710-0606 and ask Jon, or read the guides.

Who do I ask about a new driveway entrance near Greenville?

Whoever maintains the road. Bond County has far more township road than county highway, so for most rural drives it is the township road district. County highways go to the county engineer's office in Greenville, state routes to IDOT, and streets in town to the City of Greenville.

How do I know if my drive needs rebuilding or just new rock?

If the base is firm and the problem is potholes and a flattened crown, a regrade and fresh rock usually fixes it. If deep ruts and soft spots come back every spring, the base has failed and needs rebuilding there. That is usually clear once the drive has been walked and the soft spots probed.

Do you put in the culvert as well?

Yes. The culvert is set under the entrance at the right depth and grade, builds the entrance over it and shapes the ditch either side. Check with the road's owner first, because some want to approve the pipe size.

Do you do asphalt?

No. 3D builds and repairs gravel drives and rock pads only, with no asphalt paving. If you plan to pave later, a properly built and compacted rock base is what the paving crew will want underneath anyway.
